Grandpa terrorizes the Kids!
Sep. 30, 2008 Posted in Comments
The reasons that Grandfathers (grandpa) terrorize children are simple and practical. One, it gets their attention. Two, it shifts their focus to you. Three it causes them to be unsure of what is going to happen next. Consequently, they are now in a receptive mood.
I feel that grandpas must help our kids overcome the instant gratification patterns society attempts to program into them.
Children are not idiots! They do a mighty good job of raising their parents. If you want to feed them myths about the Easter bunny, Santa Claus, or the tooth fairy, even Halloween; they will happily oblige you. The prime lesson they take away from all of that is that you lied! No, wonder they never received the gifts they wanted. Parents want to buy clothes, shoes not the good stuff like toys!
So, if a successful relationship between grandpa and tommy is going to develop, someone must be in charge. It is preferable that the person in charge is the Grandpa. Children have quickly learned to tune out anything or a person they don't want to listen to. Don't fall into the educational rationale that children are little understanding adults. That we must reason with them. Children may have the faces of angels but they are pure evil. A baby is the classic definition of human nature. Give me what I want, when I want, how I want and standby!
When the children are over, playing in the kitchen, a glass breaks on the floor. Upon investigation of how or what happened. I find that the darlings are lying to me or Idon'tknow is a person's name.
Kids help clean up and learn what to do around sharp objects. I have found out that kids love to be told what to do unless it is go to bed, go home, or take a bath.Children want to learn and learning is easy and all around them. Most adults have stopped seeing the world through the eyes of a child.
"How come you don't drive fast like daddy?" Tommy asks.
"A man needs to know his limitations!" I reply.
"There was I time was faster and stronger than your dad. But, you slow down as you age." I growl.
"You know, your dad was once as old as you are doing the same things." Though you might do them better. Show the kid where food comes from, not the supermarket. Also tell him or her to keep their mouth shut and learn when you take them somewhere. They can ask any questions when we leave. They need to see that poverty is an equal opportunity keeper downer. Poverty creates victims!
At some point the child figures out that you are old. (smile) Basically, that you are the one to go to the next place after death. You will have a conversation about religion, God and gods. Kids will obey you for three reasons:
- Fear
- Respect
- They always have.
I live for the moments when my son asks me, "Did I ever do that?"
"Yep", I reply.
"Why?" he queries.
I always figured you were brain damaged, but you out grew it!
Children ask questions, many questions, incessant questions until you learn to call a timeout.
"Why is the sky blue?" Tommy asks
"You have something against blue?" I reply.
This causes the boy to reflect and formulate mental questions for later. One dimension of learning is memorization or as Tommy puts it, remembering in the first place. Mnemonics is a good tool for a child to learn. It is easy to teach and fun to do. Why wife tells him what's on her grocery list and he and I go get it.
When I stop for ice cream or soda he always reminds me "This is not on the list."
"I always tell him that not what I heard."
Stay tuned for part II, The Kid Is crazy!!

Primary Day is an Important Day to Some
Apr. 4, 2008 Posted in Civic Activity
In case you have not noticed! There is a primary vote this May in North Carolina. This is an opportunity for the political parties to push their candidates upon us. We in turn will pick and choose from the slate of offerings the viable political leaders of the party.
After the serious deliberation and feat of predestination we will safely arrive at the election of the real political leaders of the land. If you are a Republican I realize that this county will be destroyed if Democrats win Congress and the Presidency. If you are a Democratic I realize that this country will be destroyed if Republicans win the Congress and the Presidency.
How can one work with the members of the opposing party after the underhanded methods and out right lies spread during the election campaign? One can't, the winning party engorged from victory will fall upon its foe with rape, pillage and villainy. In losing one party understands that its very existence is at stake. It must never compromise, the fruits of the economy must be poisoned, and rebellion must at all times be fermented.
Our current government is not returning true value for a dollar these days. We pay more and get less! The politicians themselves do not come cheap. Their pay raises are automatic and their pension and medical plans are superior to the public citizens' plans. Their demands for new taxes keeps increasing.
We need to ask ourselves how small a government is necessary to reduce our taxes 30%. Maybe less is more! With fewer politicians less money would be spent on them. There should be a law allowing deceased politicians to run for office and serve. There would be fewer debates and shorter ones at that.
I don't want any wrinkles to appear on your forehead. As an American, one of your rights is not to live in fear. Remember the promises of the these candidates. Surely they meant what they said? They would not lie, or spin falsehoods upon the public. They, the candidates, know what a promise is but I am not sure they know how to keep a promise. As to which one has commander in chief experience the answer is simple. None of them has served as commander in chief.
As to whom I want to answer the phone at 3:00 AM in the morning I realize the answer is again simple.
The President is the official of last resort. When a problem can't be handled by others it winds up on his plate. I want the one that can make a decision as a human being not as a lawyer. Lawyers are up to doing any deeds. If you think I am being unfair or biased towards lawyer. Believe me I am not! I hold politicians in lower esteem than lawyers. When the idea of not working in law strikes a lawyer they run for public office and become politicians. You may find that politics is a monopoly for those of the legal profession.
Voting is important for selecting the scoundrels. If you didn't think your vote counted don't vote and you won't have to think or be counted. A fool and his or her vote are soon separated! If you can't count on yourself why would you be adverse to others deciding for you? Those who do the counting of votes are innocent participants but those who tally the votes they are the guardians of our democracy.
The duties of power are:
- Seize power at all costs.
- Limit the power of rivals.
- Gain civil power by claiming a crisis.
- It is too dangerous to return former power.
- Unused powers are daggers poised at the throat of the ruler.
- Power is it own grace and justification.
- Warfare is the open negotiation of power and terms of rule.
- Those with power make the rule.
- Those with power always form their own religion.
- What good is power if it can't generate revenue hence taxation.
- Those in power are right.
- Those not in power are wrong.
- Those with power are not told what to do.

What Recession?
Apr. 3, 2008 Posted in Comments
I drove through Greensboro checking out fast food restruants. They are still in business and have customers. Crime is increasing in Greensboro. People losing jobs are also increasing. Savings rate of the public has declined. Mass media outlets are trumpeting the call that “Recession is here!” What is really happening is that people are suddenly wondering if they better keep some money at home instead of spending it. The sub-prime scandal demonstrates that no one is watching the store. If you are the seller you will be bailed out. Good luck to you if you are the public buyer.
Newspapers writers seldom understand economics or business. They couldn't guess correctly what the economy is doing and why! Their eyes glaze over when they see a stock chart. Making money is dull if you are not a rock star or Hollywood celebrity. Wall Street is a dull place for suits there is nothing cool happening there!
I wish our currency were backed by gold not the the good will of the politicians. I yearn for the days when it wasn't immoral to make a profit if you were in business. Is there something wrong with making more money than I need? Do you know what country owns the United States of America? It is not the USA! Our treasury notes and bonds are in the hands of someone.
Saudi Arabia claims to have x amount of oil reserves. They pump out so many barrels of oil a year based on that. Reduce the number of barrels of oil and the price rises. Increase the amount of oil barrels in the market and the price falls. Suppose the estimate is wrong! If I were the oil minister I would want to pump fewer barrels of oil and be paid more for each barrel. Which means that oil prices are going to rise until we can replace Saudi's oil contribution.
If congress was serious about oil, and pollution. 50 mph cars driving in the city would be available now. I don't care what the engine is as long as it is not internal combustion requiring an oil product. Right now electric cars seem to be the way to go. Yet, Congress is pushing ethanol fueled vehicles. Which are dependent on oil. Ethanol gas will use more farm corn and energy to produce it than just buying oil instead. By the way how long will an ethanol car last and its mileage rating. The consumer understands that the problem will be solved by other countries than the USA. They are willing to wait awhile for the best solution. It is not available from a US company. How much oil have the political candidates wasted flying around the country to win delegates?
As an American citizen I find it difficult to recall when a Senator or Congressman ever did something right by me. When will the Social Security slush fund stop funding the USA general treasury? When will Congress put back the money it spent. As a citizen I know I paid and I didn't spend it, so don't come after me to put more money in that endless hole.
Command and control issues are bubbling up within the armed services. To wit, Taiwan received several nuclear trigger devices instead of the batteries it ordered. Taiwan is not supposed to have the A-bomb or to be supplied one by us. Air Force planes are being loaded with live nuclear devices without the crews being told. Lately, there have been stories of our military shooting civilians. The enemy doesn't have an army with a uniform any child, women, or man may serve in it and attack our forces. I don't want to see our forces reduced to volunteer targets for the enemy so some reporter can't write about a civilian being killed.
As we head toward summer remember to keep the shiny side up and water your grass on collection days. The city has not informed me whether it is the green or brown can collection day that you can water your lawn on. I have yet to figure out why giving them half of my recyclables and paying the same amount is a savings to a home owner? But then this is from the same people who invented the rain tax (really a run off tax) that I have to pay whether it rains even when we are in a drought! Don't believe these people are going to produce cost savings for you. Which is cheaper commercial pickup or the City of Greensboro?
The statue of General Nathaniel Greene looks good in the picture I have seen of it. Will the city mint any coins of the General? Will there be a tax relief day this year? Will the person or organization in charge of Greensboro stand up and be recognized for some questions.
What lawsuits are pending?
Who is responsible for them?
When will they be fired?
Will Mitch's management style continue?
Will the city fund the minimum wage act for all employers within the city limits?
Is there a tax that the council of Greensboro won't support or that the board of education won't recommend?
Will the secret meetings of our officials continue away from the public?
It is obvious that we need a representative at those meetings and it is not the elected officials!
I think it is time to select our public officials in Greensboro just like we select jury members. The salary is cheaper. They could not do worse than current officials! They are not entrenched in the political party system. They might even know right from wrong. A concept that so far appears to elude our city manager and district attorney. Is there a home for wayward Greensboro officials? Of course, there is, it is called JAIL.
It is good to note that there is life in the city's downtown district on Friday and Saturday nights. Not an ugly lady in sight or a club not worthy of its name. Thank God for digital cameras. Now if we can prevent the powers that be from shutting down the downtown in order to build another garage the downtown might thrive.
