With just a few weeks until Rocky Mount implements its youth-protection ordinance throughout the city, Rocky Mount police are working to ensure the measure will be put into place smoothly on Dec. 1.

Since the youth-protection ordinance was adopted by the Rocky Mount City Council in early October, Rocky Mount police officers have been undergoing training on procedures, penalties and the specifics of the ordinance; in addition to launching a massive campaign to inform parents and juveniles, said Administrative Services Division Commander Capt. Robert Baggett. (Rocky Mount Telegram)

Rocky Mount NC - Letter: Police, residents must take back neighborhoods and I agree 100%

I agree 100% the the violence that has engulfed the streets of Rocky Mount must come to an end, however it is not going to be easy because some of us have let it get too damn far out of hand.

You are right the community and the police are the combination that it will take to address the crime. You say you can recall drug deals in broad daylight and "children" standing on street corners waiting for customers.  I do not question that you are aware of all of the above however I do question that you say you recall the police driving by while these things go on. I do not believe that an officer will drive by and see illegal activities going on and not intervene.

You say after someone tried to burglarize the home ya'll occupied, it took the police almost 30 minutes to arrive as you sat with your infant son praying the assailants did not return. I understand your frustration however since there are a certain number of officers on duty during a given shift, if there are more than one call during the same time, the officers are issued to go to the highest priority call. For instance if the burgular was still in the house they would treat that as a high priority call.

I disagree with you as it relates to your comments, before the community is willing to help the police, the community has to feel comforted and safe knowing when we need help, they will come as fast as they travel to the "other side" of Rocky Mount. The community should always have trust in the police that they will come to our rescue in a professional manner.

I feel the police department is doing some good things because I continue to read the papers and they are removing guns from the streets and locking up those who they can get to.

I hope this is not true, we live in fear while the police ride by allowing these "children" to inflict fear and maintain control. How many innocent people must die? I would think that the police would want the neighborhoods safe because more than likely they live a neighborhood and their family and friends as well.

Now you are right on target when you say, "until we all (residents and police officers) let go of our fears and do our part, we shall continue to live crippled in our own homes. Rocky Mount is being raped by gang violence committed by children – children without resources, without parents, without guidance.

The time to take back our communities is now. A life crippled by ever looming fear is not living at all."

Amen!!

Now with my 12th grade high school diploma it is of my opinion that the teacher is admitting to having an affair with the student.

Rocky Mount NC - Shouldn't a man's life be worth more?

I have had a hard time dealing with this issue. I remember when this happened and I talked to someone who was at the scene when it happened.

The piece that is missing in my opinion is why would the owner of the parking lot that the car being towed from would put the tow truck driver in this type of jeopardy? I find it strange that anyone would go to a club that time of the morning where a bunch of folks who could somewhat be difficult to deal with and hook up to a car leaving the owner of the car embarassed. P

Now my question is, was it worth attempting to have a car towed from the parking lot of a closed business?

My sympathy goes out to the family of the tow truck driver because it was a senseless murder. But I also hope there is a lesson learned out of this. I know the owner of the parking lot probably didn't want the club going folks parking there for many reasons one being because they left trash everywhere. (Just assuming don't know if trash was an issue.) But whatever the issue was, again I ask the question, was it worth attempting to have a car towed from the parking lot of a closed business?

But my final answer is it was the choice that the driver made to go to the location that night. We must make good decisions no matter if we are doing things for money.

And as it relates to the Rocky Mount Police Department investigation. The Police Department can only question those present and take in the information given. If the people do not talk and really tell what happen, the Police can't make them talk. This is just a sad situation but again it should be a lesson learned.

Rocky Mount NC - Outside Investigation for Rocky Mount Police Chief?

Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 10:58 AM

Posted in Rocky Mount Police Department

by DCN

David Perkins host FM 99.3 RBC Centura Spotlight on the Community and Jeff Herrin editor Rocky Mount Telegram held a discussion on Tuesday May 27 about the Chief being accused of having an affair with a former cadet. Herrin said he felt the city should have done an outside investigation instead of the city doing the investigation. He said the Chief has done a good job however he felt in order to bring some closure to this matter that there should be an independent investigation.

I called in to the show and responded by saying that I have much respect for Herrin however I understand he keeps talking about bringing some closure to this matter. I said but we can not mislead folks about the city doing an outside investigation because the matter is an internal matter because the Chief has not committed a crime per my sources. I said I know it does not sound good the Chief being accused of having an affair with a former cadet however we must live with the policies and procedures.

Friday, June 6, 2008: In re: Glenn Miller on Adultery Statue - I clearly addressed Mr. Viverette but because Miller has been out to discredit me he thought he was so damn smart by posting the statue. That is fine however I was trying to get Mr. Viverette to prove his point by giving us the statue and was hoping it was going to be one that related to the Manley and Moore issue but he has not responded but Miller again wants to be the one to attempt to discredit me. Hell if I make a mistake I will come back and correct it but on this one I still say the adultery law do not relate to Manley and Moore simply because it has not been proven that they had an affair. If proven then another story for another day.

NOTE: The above link is for Glenn Miller who posted about the statue on Jeff's Blog. Miller's ignant a... must can't comprehend the difference that it was the judge who came up with this and not the female nor a governmental body. But this was a joke. ... read the full comment by Glenn Miller.
