Wilson NC - Cities fight power rate increase, Andre Knight urged the board to consider cuts to the budget and . .

Great job Knight for challenging the board to consider looking at the budget. There is a meeting today about the budget so can't wait to see how it unfolds.

Wilson leaders fought against a 4 percent electric rate increase that was passed Wednesday by the N.C. Eastern Municipal Power Agency.

Fred Horne, Wilson's director of utilities, said during the NCEMPA rate committee meeting that the increase should be postponed because of declines in the energy market, including nuclear fuel, which is used in the production of electricity. The cost of natural gas, oil and gasoline have all dropped during the past month. Horne said that information presented by ElectriCities staff, including a projected $19 million increase in costs in 2009, was based on October information. (Wilson Times)

Anchorage Alaska - Stevens Bows Out in Alaska Senate Race

Posted in Greenville City Council

by DCN

It truly is the end of an era – Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator in history and a force on Capitol Hill for decades, conceded his re-election loss today.

The end was not what Mr. Stevens would have scripted – a defeat just weeks after his conviction in federal court on ethics charges. The final votes were counted Tuesday, his 85th birthday, and the news came after his colleagues considered but postponed a vote on banishing him from the Republican ranks. (The Caucus)

Wilson NC - Censorship and ElectriCities RATE INCREASE

http://www.wilsontimes.com/News/Breaking/

Does this sound as stupid to you as it does me? You read it right. They are out of money so they need to build up a fund and they need to do that by charging us. I know what you are thinking ... they could make cuts, freeze hiring, cut out advertising, sell their hybrid car, get rid of the wasteful fleet cars, stop buying goodies, stop taking trips, stop sponsoring groups and events, end their beach parties, eliminate too many lobbyists, eliminate communications, planning, marketing, regulatory affairs, economic development ... so many options. But they come up with charging us. And has anyone seen any cuts? I am beginning to believe the idiot CEOs standing before Barney Frank are better than the ElectriCities keystone cops. Tilton is gone but his legacy remains.

And, a friend just told me that the Wilson Times buckled to the "online forum" complaints from the high elected officials. That's right folks, people blogged in Wilson about corruption, improper spending, situations in schools, taxes, parking, buildings, late fees and it caused pain to the Mayor, Council Members, County Commissioners, School Board so they pooled their influence and got the paper to shut it down. How do you like that for censorship? they can take it down cause the big dogs don't like it but it does not stop us from writing the truth.

Jim

Speaking Truth to Power - “FIRST FRIEND”IS IN THE HOUSE by William Reed Columnist

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 11:17 PM

Posted in William Reed Columnist

by DCN

Before President-Elect Barack Obama and wife Michelle attended her 52nd birthday party, Valerie Jarrett had already agreed to join Obama in the White House as senior advisor and assistant to the president for intergovernmental relations and public liaison.  In putting Ms. Jarrett in the West Wing of the White House, Obama has within arms length a close personal friend who has played a key role in his quick political rise from the Illinois Senate to the presidency in just four years.

Valerie Bowman Jarrett (born November 14, 1956) is not only a friend of the Obamas; she is a recognized Chicago lawyer, businesswoman, and civic leader. As Obama’s First Friend, Jarrett will head up the “Chicago White House”.  A long-time friend and political mentor to Barack, Jarrett has a distinguished portfolio and is one of the best-connected people in Chicago.

Born Valerie Bowman, she has been a fixture among Chicago’s elite for years and since the 1980s has blazed a trail in the city’s corporate, civic and social life.  Jarrett was once a summer tour guide at the Museum of Science and Industry is now a trustee on the museum board.  A clerk at the University of Chicago Medical Center during her youth, Jarrett is currently chair of the University Of Chicago Medical Center Board Of Trustees - Obama taught at the University of Chicago law school

Not to be considered a lightweight just because she knows the Obamas, Jarrett has a solid background in Chicago politics and knows the tricks of the trade.  Five years his senior, Valerie Jarrett is Barack Obama’s political and financial godmother.  She was the highest ranking female and African American on the campaign.  A fixture around the Obama’s kitchen table for years, Jarrett says, “The man is decent to his core. And with ground-up organizing, he has attracted extraordinary people."  Definitely one of the “extraordinary people” in his adult life, Jarrett has supported Obama with her personal clout and raised seven-figure money for his political campaigns at the local, state and recently, the national level.  She enters the White House battle tested as a veteran of numerous years in Chicago's City Hall.  She began her political career in 1987 and initially worked for the city’s first black mayor, Harold Washington, but most of her tenure there was under Mayor Daley where she rose to planning and development commissioner.  Between October 1995 and August 2003, she was chairwoman of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).

Like Barack, Jarrett has her own unusual biography.  Light-skinned, at first blush she might be considered as Caucasian.  But Jarrett was born to an African-American family in Shiraz, Iran, where her father, Dr. James Bowman, ran a hospital for children as part of a program that sent American doctors and agricultural experts to developing countries to help jump-start their health and farming efforts.  At age 5, the family moved to London for one year, then returned to Chicago in 1963.

Her accent also betrays Jarrett’s racial connections.  But, she has sound roots in her race consciousness.  As a teen, she spent her summers traveling to Ghana, Nigeria and Egypt, among other places.  Her family ties illustrate a legacy of African American achievements.  Ms. Jarrett’s father is a pathologist and geneticist and currently Professor Emeritus in Pathology and Medicine, at the University of Chicago.  On her mother's side, she has a storied pedigree. Her great-grandfather was the first African-American to graduate from M.I.T. and Jarrett's grandfather, Robert Taylor, was a pioneering Chicago Housing Authority chairman for whom the infamous high-rise projects were later named.  Her great-uncle is Washington powerbroker Vernon Jordan.  Her mother, Barbara T. Bowman, still lives and is an African-American early childhood education expert and co-founder of the Erikson Institute for child development.

Divorced, Jarrett was married to Dr. William Robert Jarrett, a physician, from 1983 to 1988.  Her former father-in-law is the late Vernon Jarrett, who was a venerated Chicago Defender and Sun-Times columnist, one of the few highly visible African Americans in the Chicago media establishment.  Their daughter, Laura, is a 23-year-old Harvard Law student.

Raleigh NC - NAACP prodding NCSU

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 10:45 PM

Posted in Presidential Election Obama Biden

by DCN

When you lead the North Carolina NAACP, you have to make tough calls. What's serious enough to get the NAACP involved?

Do it too much, and you'll chase every slight and dilute your impact. Do it too little, and you're a potted plant.

The Rev. William J. Barber II, head of the state NAACP, had to make a call recently when racist language was painted in the Free Expression Tunnel at N.C. State by several students. Initially, he wasn't sure. "When I first heard about it, I thought it might be something like 'We hate Obama.' "

But then he examined photos of the wall. The students had written "Let's shoot that n_____ in the head" and "Hang Obama by a Noose."

In news stories, these have been described as "graffiti." When I used that term, Barber corrected me. It's hate speech and violent speech, he said. "This is about communicating threats that have great psychic history." (News & Observer)
