Great job Knight for challenging the board to consider looking at the budget. There is a meeting today about the budget so can't wait to see how it unfolds.
Wilson leaders fought against a 4 percent electric rate increase that was passed Wednesday by the N.C. Eastern Municipal Power Agency.
Fred Horne, Wilson's director of utilities, said during the NCEMPA rate committee meeting that the increase should be postponed because of declines in the energy market, including nuclear fuel, which is used in the production of electricity. The cost of natural gas, oil and gasoline have all dropped during the past month. Horne said that information presented by ElectriCities staff, including a projected $19 million increase in costs in 2009, was based on October information. (Wilson Times)

It truly is the end of an era – Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator in history and a force on Capitol Hill for decades, conceded his re-election loss today.
The end was not what Mr. Stevens would have scripted – a defeat just weeks after his conviction in federal court on ethics charges. The final votes were counted Tuesday, his 85th birthday, and the news came after his colleagues considered but postponed a vote on banishing him from the Republican ranks. (The Caucus)

With just a few weeks until Rocky Mount implements its youth-protection ordinance throughout the city, Rocky Mount police are working to ensure the measure will be put into place smoothly on Dec. 1.
Since the youth-protection ordinance was adopted by the Rocky Mount City Council in early October, Rocky Mount police officers have been undergoing training on procedures, penalties and the specifics of the ordinance; in addition to launching a massive campaign to inform parents and juveniles, said Administrative Services Division Commander Capt. Robert Baggett. (Rocky Mount Telegram)

Does this sound as stupid to you as it does me? You read it right. They are out of money so they need to build up a fund and they need to do that by charging us. I know what you are thinking ... they could make cuts, freeze hiring, cut out advertising, sell their hybrid car, get rid of the wasteful fleet cars, stop buying goodies, stop taking trips, stop sponsoring groups and events, end their beach parties, eliminate too many lobbyists, eliminate communications, planning, marketing, regulatory affairs, economic development ... so many options. But they come up with charging us. And has anyone seen any cuts? I am beginning to believe the idiot CEOs standing before Barney Frank are better than the ElectriCities keystone cops. Tilton is gone but his legacy remains.
And, a friend just told me that the Wilson Times buckled to the "online forum" complaints from the high elected officials. That's right folks, people blogged in Wilson about corruption, improper spending, situations in schools, taxes, parking, buildings, late fees and it caused pain to the Mayor, Council Members, County Commissioners, School Board so they pooled their influence and got the paper to shut it down. How do you like that for censorship? they can take it down cause the big dogs don't like it but it does not stop us from writing the truth.

When you lead the North Carolina NAACP, you have to make tough calls. What's serious enough to get the NAACP involved?Do it too much, and you'll chase every slight and dilute your impact. Do it too little, and you're a potted plant.
The Rev. William J. Barber II, head of the state NAACP, had to make a call recently when racist language was painted in the Free Expression Tunnel at N.C. State by several students. Initially, he wasn't sure. "When I first heard about it, I thought it might be something like 'We hate Obama.' "
But then he examined photos of the wall. The students had written "Let's shoot that n_____ in the head" and "Hang Obama by a Noose."
In news stories, these have been described as "graffiti." When I used that term, Barber corrected me. It's hate speech and violent speech, he said. "This is about communicating threats that have great psychic history." (News & Observer)
