Washington DC - My address to Congress

Curmilus --

Last night, I addressed a joint session of Congress for the first time.

To confront the serious economic challenges our nation faces, I called for a new era of responsibility and cooperation. We need to look beyond short term political calculations and make vital investments in health care, energy, and education that will make America stronger and more prosperous well into the future.

Watch a few highlights from my address and share it with your friends now:

Watch the video

A little more than a month into my administration, we've already taken bold steps to address our urgent economic problems.

Through the Recovery Act, the Stability Plan, and the Housing Plan, we're taking the immediate necessary measures to halt our economic downturn and provide much-needed assistance to working people and their families.

But to set our country on a new course of stability and prosperity, we must reject the old ways of doing business in Washington. We can no longer tolerate fiscal deficits and runaway spending while deferring the consequences to future generations.

That's why I pledged last night to cut our deficit in half by the end of my term. Achieving that goal will require making sacrifices and hard decisions, as well as an honest budgeting process that is straight with taxpayers about where their dollars are going.

Watch some key moments from my address now:

http://my.barackobama.com/presidentialaddress

Central to this plan will be a renewed commitment to honesty and transparency in government. Restoring our country's economic health will only happen when ordinary citizens are given the opportunity to hold their representatives fully accountable for the decisions they make.

I look forward to continuing to work with you as we bring about the change you made possible.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

Washington DC - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

Subject: Thank Rep. Price and Sen. Hagan
To: Sandra Battle

Sandra --

President Obama launched the most ambitious effort to stimulate the
economy in our nation's history when he signed the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act on Tuesday.

Your representatives need to hear from you when they vote for the
change you mandated in November. Doing what's right can be thankless
when the culture of Washington tries to make political games out of
the issues that matter to everyday Americans.

You're part of a powerful grassroots movement that can change that
dynamic. According to our records, you live in North Carolina's 4th
district.

Rep. David Price and Sen. Kay Hagan's votes were crucial to passing
the bill and creating and saving jobs in North Carolina.

Can you pick up the phone right now to thank Rep. Price and Sen. Hagan?

Rep. David Price
202-225-1784

Sen. Kay Hagan
202-224-6342

Report your call.

Here are some suggested talking points for your call:

- I'm calling to thank [Congress member's name] for supporting the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
- I'll be watching closely online and in the news how taxpayers' money
is spent in the implementation of this Act.
- I encourage [Congress member's name] to continue working with
President Obama to lift America out of this economic crisis.

After your call, please record your feedback here:

http://my.barackobama.com/stimulusthanks

We still have a long way to go, but working together we were able to
take this important first step.

With the plan in place, more than 2 million people will be lifted out
of poverty, 20 million at risk of losing their health care will be
protected, and 3.5 million jobs will be created or saved.

There will be plenty more ways for you to contribute in the weeks and
months ahead.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mitch

Rocky Mount NC - GOP governors self-serving about stimulus

This article is on point however it could go deeper.

Funny as hell to me. It is my opinion that certain folks are not going to accept the fact that our President is black and they will do anything they can not to support him by any means necessary.

I will be giving more of my opinions on the State of the 1st Black President of these United States in the next couple of days. C. Dancy II - Editor/TPA

A small group of Republican governors last week sought to score some ideological points by announcing that they may not accept some of the money due their states in the $787 billion federal stimulus package. (Rocky Mount Telegram)

Curmilus --

Last night, President Obama gave his first-ever prime time press conference to call for immediate action on his economic recovery plan.

Today, the Senate voted to pass the President's plan. But there's another round of voting in both houses of Congress before the president can sign it into law.

Make sure that your voice is heard in this process.

Watch the video and share your economic crisis story. If you've already shared your story, talk to a friend, neighbor, or family member and record their story.

Pinetops NC - Pinetops officer serves in inauguration

When President Obama took the constitutional oath of office, the son and grandson of two Pinetops women were smiling.

For Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Tyrone Dickens, son of Dorothy Donell Dickens and grandson of Dorothy Mayfield, both of Pinetops, weeks of training and coordination — along with many early morning and late night rehearsals in rainy, frigid weather — paid off in helping to make this historical inauguration a huge success. Forty-five years ago, my father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., proclaimed his dream for America "that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed."

His words, spoken in Lincoln's shadow on Aug. 28, 1963, will echo profoundly on Jan. 20, 2009. The ideals that Abraham Lincoln and my father championed will advance when Barack Obama takes the presidential oath of office. (Washington Post)
