Three GOP candidates have thrown their names into the hat for state and national government seats.
Dr. Robert A. Coats of Rocky Mount filed Thursday to run against Rocky Mount Councilman W.B. Bullock for the GOP nod in the N.C. House District 25 race.
Coats said his decision to run stems from seeing – as an employee of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services . . . (Source Rocky Mount Telegram)

Jerry Meek, Chairman
North Carolina Democratic Party
220 Hillsborough Street
Raleigh, NC 27603
Dear Chairman Meek:
It is with both regret and anticipation that I resign my position as chairman of the First Congressional District Democratic Party of North Carolina, effective immediately. I will be pursuing a new direction in my work within the North Carolina Democratic Party and the residents of North Carolina. My plan is to file for the North Carolina Senate District 5 at noon today.
It has been a genuine pleasure working with you, your staff, North Carolina Democratic Party officers at all levels, United States Representative G.K. Butterfield, his staff, a host of North Carolina elected officials, and many great Democrats from across our state, especially those in the 23 counties in the First Congressional District of North Carolina. It was also wonderful working with Mira Jones, eastern political director. She is truly dedicated to the residents of our great District. Our work has been challenging and rewarding. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to serve as the chairman of the First Congressional District Democratic Party of North Carolina.
If I may help with any transition, please know that I will gladly make myself available. Thank you so much for your friendship and support over the years.
Sincerely,
Donald G. Davis

US Rep G.K. Butterfield

Eastern Political Director Mira Jones

C. Dancy II - TPA Opinion: This is a sad day for the NC Democratic Party because Mayor Don Davis was one of the best Chairmans we have had since my involvement in the party since the early 90's. I have truly enjoyed working with him. Davis had a tough task of carrying out the appointments of House Rep. Howard Hunter and Senator Robert Hollomon who died within 24 hours of each other. I attended all of the appointments and Mayor Davis did an execellent job. The last appointment was former Rocky Mount Councilwoman being appointed to fill House Rep. Ed Jones seat when he was appointed to fill Senator Hollomon's seat. I had the opportunity to drive now House Rep. Angela Bryant to Roanoke Rapids on the morning that she was appointed. I also thank you for answering the call when I requested that you attend our Edgecombe County Democratic Party meeting during the time of the Board of Elections appointment. Thank you Mayor Davis for your professionalism and there is no doubt the person who follow you will have some big shoes to fill.

Two local Democrats formally signed up to fill an empty seat in the N.C. House on Monday, the first day of the election filing period.
Candidates Carnell Taylor and Randy Stewart filed to take the post that will be vacated by Bill Daughtridge, R-Nash, who is running for state treasurer.
Democrat Shelly Willingham filed to again challenge N.C. Sen. Clark Jenkins, D-Edgecombe, for his District 3 seat. (Source Rocky Mount Telegram)
C. Dancy II - TPA Opinion: I can not believe that Willingham has filed to run against Senator Clark Jenkins. My question is why would Willingham waste his time and money? I sure hope a 3rd person file to make this race interesting because at this point this race will not be interesting at all.

On Saturday night I attended the pre-announcement of G.K. Butterfield re-election for Congress at Bill Ellis Convention Center Wilson NC. There were about 400 – 500 supporters present.
As the Congressman entered the room he began at the front of the room and made his way through the crowd hugging and shaking nearly everybody's hand until he reached the back of the room.
Mayor of Snow Hill Rev. and Dr. Donald G. Davis of Snow Hill was the MC for the evening. Mayor Davis is also the chair of the 1st Congressional District Democratic Party.
Mayor Davis called upon the Mayor Pro-tem of Wilson Rev. Malcolm Johnson who is also the pastor of St. Rose Disciples Church. Others on the program were State House Rep. Angela Bryant Rocky Mount, Mr. Frank Emory Chairman Wilson County Board of Commissioners, A.C. Coleman Wilson City Councilman, Mildred Council City Council of Greenville NC and she asked her fellow commissioner Rose Glover to stand. Mayor of Wilson Bruce Rose followed Glover because he had just arrived from another event in Wilson however he said this was the biggest event of the event.
Mayor Davis all Democratic Party Chairs and elected officials present along with ministers to stand.
Mayor Davis then introduced Attorney Darryl Smith to present the speaker of the evening Congressman G.K. Butterfield. Attorney Smith talked about all that Butterfield has accomplished in such a short period of time which is unheard of. He talked about the committees that Butterfield has been appointed to.
Congressman G.K. Butterfield was applauded as he came forward and gave us the state of the nation. He said he was going to fly to Maryland on Sunday morning to speak at an event for Senator Barack Obama for President and then he was going to fly back to Wilson. On Monday morning he was going to Raleigh to officially file and then he will make stops in Hertford County and Elizabeth City and then head back to Washington DC.
People left fired up and ready to go.
And then it was chicken and barbecue time.
Entertainment was by a local band The Boyz who played old school music.

For those readers who read the Rev. Curtis Gatewood's letter published Jan. 17 and could not understand his attempt at intelligently calling us bigots, let me explain. He is using big words to bring attention away from the fact that . . . (Source Wilson Times)
C. Dancy II - TPA Opinion: How damn ignant. Rev. Gatewood's letter has nothing to do with the fact that several charges were dropped as it relates to Johnson being at the murder scene during the time of the murder. What I found to be ignant was the following comments, "See, it does not matter what color you are in Wilson; it matters how much money you can put in people's campaigns and what favors your family can provide. When you have people in positions that do nothing but be figureheads, then you have this kind of problem with outside influences." I say color does matter as well as money and James Johnson who just happens to be black and has limited resources when it comes to money is a prime example. RACE MATTERS. And anybody who do not understand and recognize that color matters are in for a rude awakening. How many more James Johnsons will it take to see that we have a problem with our judicial system?

Historian Timothy Tyson criticized former Gov. Charles B. Aycock Monday night as a white supremacist who only funded schools for blacks as a political maneuver.
Aycock, governor from 1901-1905, has long been celebrated in North Carolina as a champion of public education. His birthplace, located outside Fremont, is a state historic site.
