Rev. Barber Elected to National Board

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, president of the NC NAACP, has won election to the national board of the NAACP. In a three-person contest for the Region 5 board seat, with 329 voting delegates, Rev. Barber received 177 votes. He was elected over the incumbent, Madie Robinson of South Carolina, who received 94 votes, and one other candidate.

Prior to the election, Rev. Barber offered an inspiring, passionate, and visionary speech to the delegates of Region 5, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Mississippi. He was nominated for the position by fellow North Carolinian Helen Coleman, who already sits on the national board.

The 99th Annual National NAACP convention is being held this week in Cincinnati, Ohio. More than 9,000 delegates, alternatives and observers are in attendance.

Accompanying Rev. Barber to the convention are his family, members of the NC NAACP executive committee, NC delegates, alternates, and observers.

He will join other members of the board in support of the new national NAACP President, Ben Jealous, who takes office September 1, 2008.

Baltimore Md- THREE NAACP FINALISTS - PICK SEEN CRUCIAL TO SURVIVAL OF GROUP

Three candidates have emerged as finalists for the national NAACP’s top position, the Free Press has learned.
But an undercurrent of discontent over the choices of a special NAACP search committee may force the nation’s oldest civil rights organization to find an alternative from within its own upper ranks.

According to highly placed sources, . . . (Source Wilmington Journal)

C. Dancy II - TPA Opinion: So how did these (3) guys get chosen? So it looks like the choosing of a new National President is going to be very interesting. It is too bad Rev. William J. Barber II is not a candidate because he would be a strong President. Nope he needs to stay here in NC and clean up some stuff. But that will be tough when others around him on his team are not speaking up about the issues we have. But I hope things are going to change and if not, I hope things change during the next election of officers.

Cincinnati Ohio - National NAACP Rep. Nelson Rivers goes visits Cincinnati Branch

I received a call from Ohio today to inform me that Rivers had flown in today to explain the policy pertaining to serving as a NAACP Branch President and an elected official. The problem for them is that the National is not enforcing the policy nationwide and also they didn't understand why he would fly in to attend their meeting when the National Board is supposed to be broke.

I will be doing a follow up when I get a report from Cincinnati about what happened at the meeting tonight.
