STOP the Funeral Initiative Second Annual
Community Prayer Walk

The STOP the Funeral Initiative Covenant Partners, friends and community leaders invite our Wayne County community to join us for our second annual NAACP Back to School Stay in School Rally. St Mark Church, 700 West Ash Street, will once again host this event in their fellowship hall on Thursday, August 7th, 2008 from 6pm to 9pm. Last years event had more than 300 youth and their parents in attendance.
The NAACP Back to School/Stay in School (BTS/SIS) Program has begun its 22nd year of preparing, inspiring and instructing youth of all ages with the "tools" necessary to graduate high school. Founded in 1984, the program is composed of more than 30 sites located at churches, schools and community centers across the nation.

Bishop Alvin A. Smith, pastor of St Mark Church of Christ anticipates more than 40 Covenant Partner churches and their youth will participate in this years event. His wife and event organizer, Doris Smith, wants all Wayne county children come out for the fun.   To reduce crime and violence in our community, we must fight to keep kids in school. We to know that success is possible and there are those in the community willing to help.

Their will be empowering workshops for parents and students, entertainment and a back to school pep rally.  There will be prizes, games and students will receive school supplies as well.

The Stop the Funeral Initiative, formed shortly after a young lady was shot and killed at a funeral here in Goldsboro, is a collaborative effort of Rebuilding Broken Places, CDC, The Goldsboro/Wayne Branch-NAACP, and the Wayne County Faith Community.

MEDIA ADVISORY

Immediate Release
4 April 2008

Today, I filed a Residency Challenge against Rev. Roosevelt Higgs. It is with much regret that I have to do so however I have been harassed by this man for several years and constantly over the past 2 years. He continues to harass Rocky Mount Councilman Andre Knight and myself along with some others.

I have documentation dated April 3, 2008 from the Edgecombe County Planning Department that shows that there is no livable structure on the property. (See attachment for the actual letter.)

I also have documentation dated October 15, 2006 that states that there was a Transportable Housing Unit at the location however the unit was a self-contained unit having water and sewer facilities and powered by a generator. This unit was placed on site without proper permits which is in violation. (See attachment for the actual letter.)

I have pictures that I took dated September 19, 2006 at the property where Higgs claims as his residence and this was my findings: there was an old camper trailer, an old school bus, a couple of old vans, 2 old trucks, an old boat, 2 old single wide trailers and an old barn sitting off the ground with steps. (See pictures)

I filed a Residency Challenge against Higgs on January 31, 2007 and the Edgecombe County Board of Elections Chair Gladys Shelton Democrat and Bettye Lewis Republican ruled against me. Sam Branch voted in my favor and also asked the board to go out to the property but they did not. I know my presentation was damn good because I had pictures of the location that Higgs has been claiming as his residence and also I had letters that I sent certified that was returned. Former Board of Elections Gayle Hudson was a part of the conspiracy with Shelton and Lewis. If they had voted in my favor it would have undone the residency challenge that they ruled in Higgs favor when he challenged Rocky Mount Councilman Andre Knight that is in the NC Court of Appeals as we speak.

Because of the Edgecombe County Board of Elections, the Edgecombe County Planning Board, the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners, The Daily Southerner editor Terry Smith, Kenneth Pledger and some others I have had to file harassing and threatening phone call charges with the Edgecombe County Judicial System against Higgs early last year that we just finished up in court last month March 2008.

I will be attending the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday to address them because County Manager Lorenzo Carmon was nasty as hell when Councilman Knight spoke to him in October 2007 in reference to a follow-up to the Minimum Housing Code complaint when we visited the planning board office in September 2007.

I have requested through an email and a telephone call to the Edgecombe County Manager to inform the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners to remove Higgs from the Edgecombe County Human Relations Commission and Carmon said Higgs appointment is up in June and he didn’t think they were going to re-appoint him. I said I want him removed immediately. I can now add to the Commissioners list that I have it documented that Higgs has violated the Edgecombe County Minimum Housing Code that was adopted (on October 6, 2003).

I feel strongly that the former Board of Elections Director Gayle Hudson was forced to resign and/or retire. Although the Board of Elections chooses the Director the county has the final say so.

Because of all of the above protecting Higgs allowing him to be out of compliance for whatever reason, my family and I have been harassed. Rocky Mount Councilman Andre Knight has been harassed.

It is time to bring some closure to all of the Rev. Roosevelt Higgs drama and I am starting with the Board of Elections Office, the County Manager, County Commissioners and will move forward to the Edgecombe County Democratic Party. I have letters to all of the above where I made a request to them including the Edgecombe County Democratic Party to remove Higgs from their roll books.

I look forward to addressing the new Board of Elections members however Bettye Lewis who ruled against me is still on the board.
