Wilson NC - Wilson murder trial to use jurors from Edgecombe

Officials conducting a high-profile murder trial in Wilson County will rely on jurors selected out of Edgecombe County to decide a man’s fate.

James Johnson is accused of aiding in the 2004 kidnapping, rape and murder of 17-year-old Brittany Willis. The case drew media attention when civil rights activists accused prosecutors of ignoring facts and pursuing charges against Johnson because he’s black.

First-degree murder charges against Johnson were dropped in Dec. 2007, more than three years after being arrested. The 22-year-old still faces a charge of accessory after the fact. (Rocky Mount Telegram)

Wilson NC - Don't let logistics delay Johnson trial

It is so damn funny how the Wilson Times and some others feel that only the family of Brittany Willis feel this case has gone long enough. The same goes for the family of James Johnson who want to bring some closure to this case as well. C. Dancy II Editor/TPA

For everyone concerned, but especially for the family of Brittany Willis, this case has gone on long enough. If moving it to Wake means that we can avoid any logistical hassles getting the trial started, then that seems like the best course of action. (Wilson Times)

The jury that will decide the fate of James A. Johnson will not be selected in Wake County after all.

Resident Superior Court Judge Milton F. Fitch Jr. told attorneys in the case today that the Trial Court Administrator for the 7th Judicial District, Bill Nicholls, contacted the trial court administrator in Wake County, only to be told that their courthouse was being renovated and that facilities would not be available for jury selection.

Fitch met with special prosecutor, David W. McFadyen, and defense attorneys Irving Joyner and William F.W. Massengale, in Wilson County Superior Court to discuss the logistics of selecting a jury. (Wilson NC)

Wilson NC - Remember the Willis family's loss

Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 8:55 PM

by DCN

I am writing this letter in regards to the Brittany Willis case. Could we please take the time to stop and think about what the Willis family is going through?

I have lost loved ones and that hurts, but I think that losing your own child is probably the most painful thing that anyone could endure, and that goes for any race. I think that is being forgotten in this case. Love knows no race, and . . . (Source Wilson Times)

C. Dancy II - TPA Opinion: Barnes it is okay to stop and think about the Willis family however we will decide who we will stop and think about. Why in the hell do you think that the Willis family have priority over the Johnson family?

Oh hell no, no one has forgotten the Willis family has lost a love one and I be damn if the Johnson family should have to pay for their lost since James says he had nothing to do with their loss. Don't you forget that because we sure the hell is not.

Love knows no race, and neither should justice. Oh hell no that is how it ought to be but we all know that that is not always reality. This case has always been a racial issue simply because the confessed murder is black and the victim is white. The only thing that is ludicrous is that ignant white folks want to send another black male to prison for a crime that he did not commit per the confessed murder and James Johnson himself who have stated that Johnson had nothing to do with the murder.

James Johnson is not some random African-American male that was just picked up off of the street and charged maliciously for a crime that he had no involvement in. And just what in the hell do you mean? According to all that I have read and attending several events and going into the court room the day Johnson was released on bail, it appears that he was picked up at random in my opinion. Johnson and the white male both were simply because the confessed murder was mad because Johnson and the white male had snitched on him so he first told the police that Johnson was involved in the murder but later confessed that he acted alone. Ain't no damn body trying the case in the paper, on the radio and on television simply because we want justice and right now. I will not apologize if you think that it is putting salt on the wound for the Willis family because we are supporting James Johnson. You may as well get the hell over it because we will not stop supporting him. The damn case do not need to go to trial when there is no evidence.

Barnes you say, "a crime of rape and murder has been committed, not a crime of discrimination." Oh hell no a crime of discrimination has occurred and Johnson has been a victim for the past 4 years. Brittany has received justice because the confessed murder has received life in prison. You say this would not be a controvery is Johnson was white. So you are saying that a white person would not stand up for their child and friend if he was falsely charged? First of all if Johnson had been white more than likely he would not have been falsely charged.

Barnes you say, "the NAACP is so fast to get involved in cases that could spark racial tension that they do not take the time to educate themselves with the evidence that is being presented. Didn't they learn anything from the Duke lacrosse case?" I be damn the NAACP consist of some of the smartest damn black folks that has ever lived. The NAACP asked the same thing in the Duke Lacrosse case and that was let the system work. You see ignant it was not the NAACP that erred, it was Mike Nifong and the last time I checked he was not a member of the NAACP nor is he black. Ignant the NAACP is no different from an attorney he defend their client however if I remember correctly the NAACP did not say the boys were innocenct or guilty in the case but asked that the system work for both sides since the white boys had hired some of the best attorneys since they were all wealthy.

Barnes oh hell no I know you didn't go there. Ignant the NAACP does all of that and more. Obviously your ignant . . . do not and have not attended any NAACP meetings and events. Barnes you say, "if the NAACP wants to be an asset to the African-American community, then take the time to hold rallies on stressing the importance of an education, go into the schools and talk to teens about the importance of safe sex and family values. Help raise awareness to STDs and develop programs to help the next generation have the tools they need to develop self-esteem and set goals for their future." Ignant what in the hell do that have to do with Brittany Willis murder case?

Barnes you say, "I would like to say that emotions such as love and hurt know no color or race. We are all capable of feeling them, so let's not forget what all of this is really about. There is a family that has lost a child. Can we try to give them some consideration and some empathy?" Well Barnes I say it is ignance that you and some of your white friends/supporters of the Willis family are displaying. You give the Willis family whatever the hell you want however we will continue to give the Johnson family what they need also which is "LOVE."

Note: Although I am a life subscribing member of the NAACP I am not speaking for them but for myself. I be damn if I will take your insults without responding to your ignance. Also I know how to spell IGNORANT I just like the way IGNANCE sounds. LOL
