The Edgecombe County Commissioners will be a 4 -3 black majority for the 1st time in about 15 years or more. This sounds good but it will only be good if they do the right thing. I will follow them closely and hold them accountable beginning tomorrow. I had not planned on attending a meeting until January however I will begin following them monthly again on tomorrow. I have not attended but one meeting since they moved their meetings from a night meeting to a daytime meeting. I think I was the only one who publicly protested the time change.
Evelyn Powell who defeated Calvin Anderson along with Viola Harris incumbent who defeated her opponent will be sworn in at the 2:00 PM meeting. Powell will join the board immediately after they are both sworn in.
The board will elect officers by voting for a chairman and vice chairman. It will be interesting to see if the board is going to vote Leonard Wiggins (black) a senior board member as chair of the board over Charlie Harrell who has been the chair for many years.
It is always interesting to see who speaks during the public petitions.
I will be very much interested in what they have to say about the code enforcement by the planning board during their report on the agenda (item 10 D. 3).
I can't wait to see what the county manager Lorenzo Carmon will have in his Roosevelt Higgs Code Enforcement update futher down on the agenda (item 16).

An open letter to the Governor-elect
Dear Governor-elect Perdue:
It's been pretty crazy around here the last three weeks. What with the economic meltdown, the dramatic change in Washington and then the state budget shortfall and all of the news surrounding your soon-to-be administration here in Raleigh, some of us progressives have forgotten our manners.
We launched right into a series of critiques of your campaign and your initial statements and actions after the election without even taking a step back and saying some basic things that need to be said. Sorry about that. This can happen when you care a lot - or as one conservative Republican lawmaker told us the other day in a rather strange email, "have such hatred in your heart." (We don't actually, and will try to take the attack as a compliment). (NC Policy Watch)

Officials conducting a high-profile murder trial in Wilson County will rely on jurors selected out of Edgecombe County to decide a man’s fate.
James Johnson is accused of aiding in the 2004 kidnapping, rape and murder of 17-year-old Brittany Willis. The case drew media attention when civil rights activists accused prosecutors of ignoring facts and pursuing charges against Johnson because he’s black.
First-degree murder charges against Johnson were dropped in Dec. 2007, more than three years after being arrested. The 22-year-old still faces a charge of accessory after the fact. (Rocky Mount Telegram)

So the Republican National Committee has a problem getting on board. They will be alright.
WASHINGTON - President-elect Barack Obama is receiving heaps of good tidings from both sides of the aisle during this Thanksgiving season as he puts together his administration. But at least one office is not giving him a free pass. (MSNBC)

Sen. Barack Obama ran an amazing, historic campaign. So amazing, in fact, that initial attempts to calmly analyze his victory have generally fallen short. Some media and academic experts talk as if Barack Obama came out of nowhere. There have been claims that his triumph is without historical precedent, and that the tactics and strategies his campaign employed on the way to victory were sui generis. Other commentators argue that Obama as a politician represents a complete break from earlier generations of African-American leaders. A day after the election, Time Magazine's Joe Klein asserted that Obama's post-racial victory opened up a brand new space for political participation in our society. Klein writes, . . . (Truthout)
