Rebuilding Broken Places CDC Awarded Support Our Students (SOS) Grant from
North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (DJJDP)
The North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (DJJDP) Support Our Students proposal submitted by Rebuilding Broken Places CDC has been awarded funding in the amount of $80,500 to provide after school services in Wayne County. This funding is for the period beginning July, 2008 through June 2009 with an option to renew for up to two additional years.
The DJJDP was established in July 2000 as the first cabinet-level agency to focus on juvenile justice issues and at-risk youth in the state. DJJDP administers Support Our Students (SOS) funds for the implementation of after school programs designed to create supportive extra learning opportunities that have a positive impact on the lives of school-aged children. To accomplish these goals, RBPCDC will evaluate program outcomes by establishing student benchmarks, performing quarterly student assessments, and analysis of a variety of data, including Program Director, teacher, and student surveys; demographic descriptions of participants; academic outcomes, and standardized North Carolina End-of-Grade achievement test scores.
Rebuilding Broken Places has successfully operated their PROJECT Youth Educated for Success and Service (Y.E.S.S.) SOS After School Program since July, 2005. The program has consistently provided afterschool enrichment activities for children attending Wayne County schools. “During the last school year we served over 100 students through our program. This grant will allow us to continue working with these students and their parents. In order for students to close the achievement gap they must get an early start and have someone they can count on to help them.”, said John Barnes, CEO of Rebuilding Broken Places CDC.
The program will operate at Rebuilding Broken Places CDC Greenleaf Vision of Faith Community Center,2105 North William Street, and at Goldsboro Housing Authority sites at Lincoln Homes Community Center 1009 S. Slaughter Street, and Woodcrest Terrace Community Center, 709 Waters Street.
Homework help, community service projects and character development activities that use the Liberation Curriculum taken from “The Martin L. King, Jr. Papers Project” at Stanford University, and fun activities are the hallmark of RBPCDC PROJECT YESS SOS program. New program components will include a cross age tutoring project and Project YESS Clubs such as sports, music, dance, computers, and more that the students can join. This award will serve students in grades K-8 who attend Carver Heights, School Street, North Drive, Goldsboro Intermediate and Dillard Middle Schools. Students at other schools must meet program selection criteria in order to attend the program.
Applications are currently being accepted at the Rebuilding Broken Places office at 2105 N William Street. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the program director, Rose Hinnant at 919 581-9178 x 105.
