Today, Jan. 29 is recognized by past resolutions as the annual George Henry White Day in the Town of Tarboro and Edgecombe County.
Today marks 108 years since U.S. Rep. George Henry White of Tarboro gave his “farewell to Congress” speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Represent-atives. That speech came after North Carolina had effectively disfranchised 150,000 black voters through the constitutional admendment of 1900, as had other states of the former Confederacy.
