The Edgecombe County Commissioners will be a 4 -3 black majority for the 1st time in about 15 years or more. This sounds good but it will only be good if they do the right thing. I will follow them closely and hold them accountable beginning tomorrow. I had not planned on attending a meeting until January however I will begin following them monthly again on tomorrow. I have not attended but one meeting since they moved their meetings from a night meeting to a daytime meeting. I think I was the only one who publicly protested the time change.
Evelyn Powell who defeated Calvin Anderson along with Viola Harris incumbent who defeated her opponent will be sworn in at the 2:00 PM meeting. Powell will join the board immediately after they are both sworn in.
The board will elect officers by voting for a chairman and vice chairman. It will be interesting to see if the board is going to vote Leonard Wiggins (black) a senior board member as chair of the board over Charlie Harrell who has been the chair for many years.
It is always interesting to see who speaks during the public petitions.
I will be very much interested in what they have to say about the code enforcement by the planning board during their report on the agenda (item 10 D. 3).
I can't wait to see what the county manager Lorenzo Carmon will have in his Roosevelt Higgs Code Enforcement update futher down on the agenda (item 16).

Sources say Roosevelt Higgs cursed the board telling Rev. Wayne Hines he didn't attend his damn church so basically he couldn't tell him what to do. I was told that Chairman Charlie Harrell said he was not going to have Higgs mess and that he would be removed if he kept it up. Higgs later calmed down.
Sources say Higgs was raising hell because his ignant a... is still not in compliance with the Edgecombe County Planning Department since he did not meet the November 2, 2008 deadline.
It is a damn shame that the original complaint was filed in 2006 and the county is not enforcing their policies. C. Dancy II - Editor/TPA
Documentation dated April 22, 2008 as it relates to Higgs residency is as follows: Violations Found on Property, No Livable Structure (Housing), Junked & Abandoned Vehicles & Solid Waste.

During public comment, the Rev. Roosevelt Higgs of Speed spoke against the Edgecombe County Planning Board citing him for an ordinance violation for having junked vehicles and other items on his property. (Daily Southerner)

In July, Edgecombe County had an 11.2 percent unemployment rate, the second highest of North Carolina’s 100 counties, behind only to Scotland County. (Read more)

I totally agree with Professor William Rivenbark, "But UNC School of Government Associate Professor William Rivenbark said "a single elected official could select certain initiatives to work on during (their) tenure to prepare for a bond rating increase and create community vitality." TJ Royal Daily Southerner
Individuals can make things happens because individuals must have a vision and when they have a vision and lay it out, others can get on board and help move it forward.
So my question to all elected officials, do you have a vision?

When the ruling was handed down by the N.C. Supreme Court last week, it was the culmination of nearly four years of legal battles and court visits for one former law enforcement officer. (Source Rocky Mount Telegram)
C. Dancy II - TPA Opinion - This is a good thing. Wiggs deserved this like he said. Harrell said the commissioners were trying to look out for the tax payers. Wrong answer, should have gone by what is documented.
