Instead of waiting to watch American Idol on T.V., the citizens of Rocky Mount will have the opportunity to see a real American Idol live and in color as RBC Centura Presents: Ruben Studdard: “A Night of Youth Recognition”, Thursday, January 31, 2008, at 6:00pm at the Dunn Center of the Performing Arts located on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College.
For the first time ever, Rocky Mount will experience the presence of an American Idol! Although not a Rocky Mount native, Ruben Studdard is from the south, Alabama, and in 2003, the “velvet teddy bear” as christened by Gladys Knight; won the American Idol competition.
Pulling from a variety of musical styles, R&B, Gospel, and Soul, has enabled Studdard to achieve superstardom. With three top ten hits under his belt across multiple charts, Flying Without Wings, Sorry 2004, and Superstar, Studdard has cemented his reputation as an artist of versatility.
Studdard’s Rocky Mount appearance is not due to the luck of the draw or randomness. As a child, Studdard held membership in the Hueytown Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Alabama. Of his own experience in the Boys & Girls Club, as found on his hometown Club’s website, Studdard stated “I had some of the best times of my life at the Boys & Girls Club.”
Therefore, when the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe petitioned Studdard to perform at their 2008 Youth of the Year: Sailing to New Heights Celebration, he was more than inclined to oblige. The Youth of the Year initiative recognizes and celebrates the moral character, leadership, service to the Club, family, and community, academic performance, life goals, poise and public speaking ability of our youth.
Chief Professional Officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe Counties, Theresa Shaw, said: “We are beyond excitement at this point. Our youth have never had anything like this before. The fact that we are able to provide them with this sort of star power is a strong testament to the level of community support we have; and for that we are truly thankful”
One of many key community players in making this event possible is Mrs. Shelia Martin, Executive Director of the Dunn Center: “This is definitely a great opportunity for us. To aid a community oriented organization that has been around for decades, provide an event like this for their youth is simply amazing. We are thankful to them for allowing us to be a part of this event!”
The evening’s events will be hosted by an avid supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs across the state of North Carolina, Mr. Barry Saunders. Saunders is a popular columnist for the News and Observer, a Triangle-area newspaper. His articles, despite how controversial some deem them, continue to appear every Tuesday and Friday in the Metro section and in the Opinion section on Saturdays. “We are thrilled to have him participate” Shaw said.
Also on the program is the 2003 National Youth of the Year, Mr. Donald Smith, a 13-year member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley in Tempe, Arizona. Smith was installed as the National Youth of the Year by President Bush on September 25, 2003 and is now a student at Arizona State University.
With anticipation in mind, Shaw would like to thank RBC Centura for their continuous support of the Youth of the Year event.
RBC Centura representative, Verna Graff-Gessaman, Sr. Manager, Community and Government Relations, stated that “RBC Centura recognizes and appreciates the great effort of the Boys and Girls Club in our community to help young people. We are proud to be able to assist with this important youth recognition event.”
This event is open to the general public, so we encourage all to act now while seating is still available. All tickets can be purchased for $25.00 at the Belk Box Office, from 10:00am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, at (252) 985-5197 or online at boxoffice@ncwc.edu. The Belk Box Office is located at the left front entrance to the Garner Lobby of the Dunn Center of the Performing Arts on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College.

Curmilus,
Thanks again for your continued support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe Counties.
In response to your question concerning the support of churches, unfortunately, last year, our "It Just Takes One Campaign" fell short of our projected goal of $100,000. A part of the campaign was to reach out to churches in hopes of raising much needed funds to support a fast growing number of youth who want to attend the Clubs. We sent over 300 letters to churches requesting their support. Out of the 300, we received support from 8 of the churches ranging from $500 to $1,000 contributions. Most of which have been contributors for several years. Could you imagine the number of youth that we could serve if we just got $100 per church?
Because we serve over 1800 youth we need the help of the community to sustain our clubs. We realize that some churches have their own afterschool programs and support various programs and projects. However, there are so many other youth outside our doors that need our help and for those churches who do not have programs and activities, we encourage them to send their children to the Boys & Girls Clubs. We have the resources and trained staff to provide a safe environment for youth to become productive responsible and caring citizens. As citizens, we must be informed that our state pays $87,000 per year for one child to be sent to detention and it only takes $1,500 per year to send one youth to our Boys & Girls Clubs. Once again this year, we are reaching out to the churches and have sent another letter petitioning churches for their help. I have scheduled some speaking engagements to talk with various leaders of churches. We would welcome any other invitations to come and share what we do and our success with youth for over 40 years.
Curmilus, we had 500 new members to join our club last year and our teen population doubled this summer. We hope that we can rally the support of the community to provide a place for our youth to go afterschool. Our youth are doing what we all hoped for, they are reaching out for a safe and positive environment to learn and grow. I hope we can give them a hand!
Please continue to help with our church campaign. This is such an easy and inexpensive way for a brighter future for our children.
Theresa

The Boys and Girls Club urgently needs help. In the midst of a challenging economy, the Club’s cornerstone fundraiser, It Just Takes One Campaign, barely raised $50,000.00 of a $100,000 goal. With a growing number of youth attending our clubs, we are going to have to turn kids away. Without the financial support of the community we cannot sustain our current growth. To put it clearly, we need your financial commitment to continue to serve the youth that need us most.
Without the aid of the community many of the over 1800 children that we serve will be left out. Why? Because 64% of our Club members are classified as “at risk youth.” This label implies that these young people come from single-parent households, with low annual incomes.
Despite that our grant writing went well this year, we still have funding challenges.
Specifically, nearly all of our grants are reimbursable. Therefore, we must have funds up front to pay our operational costs, salaries and program necessities. In addition, the grants do not cover all expenses incurred.
We are asking that your church please consider a Special Collection or contribution to help us sustain the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe Counties. We certainly realize you have other obligations and prior commitments, but we are asking you to acknowledge that our community’s young people are facing challenges every day. They need guidance, encouragement, and most of all a positive environment. Please support the Club in its efforts to guide over 1800 youth to realize their full potential.
Attached you will find a fact sheet proving our service’s effectiveness. I thank you for your time and look forward to a favorable reply.

Theresa Shaw Executive Director
Boys & Girls Club of Edgecombe & Nash Counties
Greetings:
Hope all is well.
First of all I would like to say that I am very proud of the local Boys and Girls Club of Nash and Edgecombe Counties. I really appreciate your passion for children and the leadership style you have as it relates to taking the Boys and Girls Club to higher heights since you have taking over the helm of this organization. My son has had the opportunity to attend the Boys and Girls Club during the past 2 summers however I am aware of many children who attend the club throughout the school year.
As you know I have a link to the Boys and Girls Club on my blog and it came to me today that I sent out a message in regards to the State of the Black Church asking them to open their doors for tutoring and etc. As you know I am very supportive of the Boys and Girls Club however I mostly donate my time video taping and promoting the work of your organization. I hope the church is supportive of the organization as well.
I know you are running a booklet campaign that are being sold to individuals whereby they can purchase food from many places throughout Edgecombe and Nash Counties at a discount and even some items are free. I have several of these booklets and again I am trying to do my part to help our area youth.
Will you please respond to this mailing to let me know if the churches are supportive by giving donations to the Boys and Girls Club? For all of the churches who do not have afterschool programs at their locations, they could still reach the children through donating to this worthwhile cause. I hope that one day I can see a Boys and Girls Club in each section of the county and this way the churches could participate financially and would not have to worry about the burden of organizing programs that are already in place.
Please send me any and all information that you may have that I can help publicize the Boys and Girls Club because the work of the organization has been great over the years. At anytime I can offer my limited services, please feel free to contact me.

but the silence of our friends! Dr. Martin L. King
Boys & Girls Club of Nash/Edgecombe Counties
"It Just Takes One" Annual Campaign
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe Counties will kick off it's annual campaign called "It Just Takes One" on January 20, 2006
The campaign will raise funds for the Clubs' after-school and summer programs and services for youth ages 5-18, living in Nash and Edgecombe Counties. Scheduled to run through March 31, 2006 the campaign seeks donations primarily from individuals.
Serving as the campaign's Chair is Evelyn Wilson, Chairperson, Edgecombe County Board of Education. The campaign's goal in its first year is to raise "60,000.00 for the Clubs' annual operating budget. Evelyn Wilson added, "We are proud to announce that to date of our campaign has raised $15,000 as a result of some early lead gifts and gifts from 100% of our board members and staff. All we need now is the rest of our community to show their support and we will be able to reach, maybe even exceed our goal."
"Our Clubs are making a difference in the community. Last year, our local Clubs served 1200 youth, a 41 percent increase from the year before. But there are still many more children in our community that need the kind of positive influence and guidance the Clubs provide, and we want to reach out to the these youth and their families, " said Charles Penny Chief Volunteer Officer for the organization.
Funds raised will help sponsor kids to attend summer camp and provide quality after school programs such as Power Hour homework help program, computer skills training, career exploration, arts & crafts, fitness and sports, and character and leadership programs such as SMART Moves and Youth of the Year.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe Counties mission is to inspire and enable all young people in Nash/Edgecombe Counties to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.
"The cost of providing the Boys & Girls Club experience to one child for a year is a about "$1,300.00" said Theresa Shaw, Executive Director. "You can see what a valuable investment that is when you compare it to the cost of incarcerating a youth who went in the wrong direction "“ usually $70,000 per year or more. The Clubs give a good return on investment."
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe Counties founded in 1966, is a non-profit, privately-funded 501©(3) organization and depends on private donations and volunteer contact the Boys & Girls Club office at (252) 977-9924 or visit the website at
It Just Takes One"¦Support Boys & Girls Clubs.
NOTE: I apologize for any errors that you may find because I retyped the information from the original material that I received in the mail. The main thing however I am challenging you to join The DCN and make a donation today. Tell the Boys & Girls Club that you heard about the campaign through The DCN News Blog.
A couple of years ago I stood up against the Edgecombe County School system when they were trying to remove the Boys & Girls Clubs from a particular school and I am proud that the school system became a better partner after the communications took place.
Last year I donated my services by videoing their main event and donating copies to all 4 units. This year I plan to do the same however I plan to make a monetary contribution as well.
So remember when you donate to The DCN you are not only donating to me but you are also providing a service to The Boys & Girls Club and other youth organizations through my services such as advertising and video taping.
In my closing, I would like to commend Theresa Shaw E.D. for taking the Boys & Girls Club to a new level since her short time in her role. I have followed the B & G over the past 2 years extensively and Nash and Edgecombe Counties ought to be proud to have the type of leadership team that now exist.
