Yes it is true the Democratic Party has had the majority in the Congress for the past 2 years for the first time in 12 years.

The Congress is made up of 235 Democrats and 200 Republicans but for a bill to pass there must be a count of 218 votes. Within the Democratic Party there are about 7 different philosophies which means they all don't think alike due to ethnic diversity, some are conservatives, there are different caucuses and etc.

The Senate is made up of 100 members that requires 51% of the votes. But there is a rule called cloture in which the Democrats need 60 votes to close the debate. So Senators who have an agenda and refuses to allow the debate to close there may never be a vote. Because of that the Democrats in the Senate who have an agenda but do not have the 10 votes they need to move their agenda they must play hard ball and exchange with the 10 Republicans in order to get the 60 votes to move it to the Senate floor. There are about 10 Republican Senators who have banned together and say the Democrats have to deal with them. These 10 Republicans are running the Senate. They add tax cuts and trade agreements to the bill and etc. Finally their is a compromise and the votes are in. Then it goes over to the President and he vetoes it. Oh well so much for a Democratic majority.

Therefore it is crucial that North Carolina vote in a new Senator Kay Hagans and vote out Elizabeth Dole who rank 93rd and some others so the Democrats can have a true majority. It is crucial that we vote in a Democratic President Barack Obama so that the Democrat majority Congress will not have to worry about their bills being vetoed.

Butterfield 1st Congressional District Wilson NC on Sunday, October 12, 2008 during a Get Out to Vote Rally for Kay Hagans for Senate at the Nash County Democratic Party Headquarters in Rocky Mount. C.
