Greetings!

Engaging the Methods of Change:
Power, Justice, Freedom and the Vote, Then & Now
65th Annual NAACP State Convention

Raleigh-The Capital City, Raleigh, NC will host the 65th Annual NAACP State Convention," Engaging the Methods of Change:  Power, Justice, Freedom and the Vote, Then & Now" October 8 -11, 2008 at the North Raleigh Hilton.

Leading national and state experts will keynote and lead workshops/seminars on the continuing disparities in the economy, health care, education, housing, workers' rights and other issues that affect the quality of life for all North Carolinians, particularly people of color.  2008 marks the 99th anniversary of the nation's premier civil rights organization, and the state NAACP is expecting up to 1,000 attendees from the civil rights and progressive communities to converge on Raleigh from across the state.

"Ours is a movement/organizing/engagement convention which brings together the grassroots with the intension of pushing a civil rights aggressive agenda in North Carolina.  We come to renew our commitments, retool our efforts, and revive our spirit.  With the ever-present threat to civil and human rights through disparities in health care, education, the mortgage foreclosure crisis, the high incidence of wrongful incarceration and unjust sentencing of blacks and browns," Rev. Barber said, "the NC NAACP is convening this civil rights conference to address those issues and those injustices affecting African-Americans and other minorities, by importantly to develop strategies to further the people's agenda at this critical juncture in our history.  The convention will have a corresponding agenda bringing together adults and youth."

Civil rights leaders and social justice activists headline the weekend:

Beginning on October 2nd in Wilmington and Winston-Salem the NCNAACP and many of its partners will begin a Pilgrimage for Justice. Core walkers will walk into communities each day on a track to Raleigh and civil rights mass meeting will be help each night with the final gathering at the state capitol grounds on the morning of Thursday, October 8th.

On October 8th the convention will feature a continuing legal education seminar which will focus on unfair sentencing, resegregation of our public schools, unjust treatment of members of the Hispanic community and legal attempts to dilute minority political strategies.

A freedom golf classic will be held, featuring business leaders and supporters.

A community economic literacy seminar focusing on the more than 40 billion dollars minority contributed to the North Carolina economy.

On Thursday the convention will open at Wake Chapel Baptist Church.  The focus will be on religious emphasis with seminars dealing with the role of faith in the civil-rights and progressive movement.  There will be community mass meeting and service on Thursday night.

On Friday, the Labor & Industry Breakfast will feature the MS State Conference President, Attorney Derrick Johnson.

The new national NAACP President and CEO, Mr. Ben Jealous will keynote the popular Membership Luncheon.

Two ugly chapters in NC's history, the 1898 Wilmington Terrorist Act, the only coup in US history and the practice of Eugenics (sterilization of Black and poor women), along with a feature on Bishop J.W. Hood (the Black Education Leader in the 1800s) will be the backdrop for an historical perspective to analyze the effects of those events and their impact upon our collective history and how to redress the past reality today.

Youth night will be held on Friday night with additional training for youth and college students on Saturday.

On Saturday, NAACP's State President, The Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II will present the "State of the State" Address at the Saturday Legislative Session that is open to the press at 10:00 AM.

The State President of AT&T of North Carolina, Mrs. Cynthia G. Marshall, is the Women in NAACP (WIN) Breakfast speaker on Saturday, October 11th, and the NAACP Washington Bureau Director, Mr. Hilary Shelton, headlines the Political Action Luncheon also on Saturday.

Of particular interest to candidates and eligible voters on Saturday, October 11th is the scheduled Candidates' Forum preceded by an extensive continuation of the state NAACP's VEPREP program, i.e., Voter Education Protection Registration Empowerment Project that focuses on non-partisan voter strategies for voter engagement.

Among other workshops the convention will offer a session by state housing experts on the home mortgage crisis.  National NAACP filed a lawsuit last July against 17 major lenders for discriminatory practices against minorities and the state NAACP has supported legislation that seeks mortgage foreclosure prevention policies, a 50 million housing trust fund, and efforts to address the needs of the 1000's of households affected in an effort to level the playing field between borrowers and lenders.

Award-winning actor and activist Danny Glover has been invited as the keynote speaker for Saturday night's Freedom Fund Awards Banquet, the culminating event for the entire convention.  Glover is well-known for many films as well as his outspoken stance for workers' rights and his stance against racism.

NCNAACP's Executive Director, Amina Turner, sees the convention reflectively:  "It is so significant that as we [NAACP] approach our 100th anniversary we begin to see a more visible and active social justice movement in our state that crosses geography, class, race, religion, language, etc., which mimics the actual beginnings of our association.  I'm expecting a remarkable time at convention."
