Monopoly utility doesn't need to advertise

Has anyone else wondered why Wilson Energy finds it necessary to advertise themselves on the large billboards around town? It's not like any competition exists here for electricity and utility services. As a forced consumer, I would feel a bit better about a rate increase if I knew that Wilson Energy was doing all it could to cut costs.

Billboards bragging about how wonderful their services are do little to console me. It's not like I'm going to go to the "other" provider in town instead of them!

Additionally, the slick reports produced in full color on heavy glossy card stock that I receive periodically about the water system could also be done considerably cheaper than what they are producing. The same message can be expressed at a lot less expense and still look nice (if that's what they are worried about). Since postage prices are weight-based, it may be possible to pay less in postage with a simpler, lighter "brochure" done much more frugally.

As we have seen over the years with government entities, those responsible tend to forget that they are spending hard-earned money and tend to forget they have a responsibility to be responsible with how they spend that money. Don't just tell me how "reliable" you are, be responsible with the money you receive and use it wisely, then I'll feel better about already-high utility bills.
