The City of Rocky Mount recognizes that our local power costs are dramatically impacted by national and international market and political conditions and we expect costs to be passed on to member municipalities in the NCEMPA umbrella. However, due to the hardship this increase will have on so many Rocky Mount citizens, the Rocky Mount City Council formally requests the NCEMPA to consider along with Electricities the possibility of absorbing some of the proposed 14% wholesale rate increase. More specifically we ask that the NCEMPA or Electricities determine how to reduce operating costs from the budget and cut at least 1.5% from our anticipated increase.
In addition, we would like Electricities and the NCEMPA to show their appreciation for their residential customer base and create incentive programs for energy conservation in homes throughout its member cities and communities. In Rocky Mount, the overwhelming percentage of our electricity sales is to residential customers. At the same time, this demographic is the most negatively impacted by rapidly increasing costs of petroleum and energy and are finding it difficult, if not nearly impossible, to pay already high rates of utilities.
Please do all you can to help us serve our customers better and work proactively with both NCEMPA and Electricities as we continue to provide quality and affordable power to customers in Rocky Mount and throughout eastern North Carolina.
