Tom Betts is a gentleman and continues to be held in high esteem. He has done more for this community than some corporations. A neophyte to politics, he simply followed the current accepted behavior in the political fundraising arena. For this, he suffered the consequences of . . . (Source Rocky Mount Telegram)

C. Dancy II - TPA Opinion: Here we go again another Republican trying to justify Betts mess. This is bull manure. It does not make it right no matter how good he is has done. It does not matter what a person has done when they do something unethnical or criminal. Oh no not saying that Betts is a criminal. Frank Ballance former Congressman who is in jail did some good things and I didn't support him and his criminal activities.

Saturday, March 1, 2008 - Gene Arnold's Misleading Letter to Telegram

Gene Arnold’s comments were misleading. A sidestep of the real issue at hand. And, in my opinion a shell game letter to the people who read the Telegram. So, let me tell you a few things you may not know about this situation. What Betts did may not be illegal, but it is UNETHICICAL. If you go back and read the article in the N&O, Betts is bold enough to say, “ I know this is short notice, but Bev is coming to Town….we need to raise $20,000. ….Make the check out to ________”. Now, this is how politics is played in Rocky Mount all the time. Has been for years. Don’t believe me? Try to get some land around here rezoned and see how far you get by “playing by the rules.” Now, let me tell you some of what hasn’t been reported in your local newspapers. Betts did the same kind of thing when trying to bring UNC to Rocky Mount. Even got up on WRAL and talked like a damn idiot. Some of Betts “low profile” politicking pissed off at least one on the UNC Governor’s Board to the point they started saying, “It’ll be a cold day in Hell”. Well, when you start playing with the old boys in Raleigh, they tend to have long memory. Now, just how do you think the N&O obtained that Betts email? I don’t think it was Divine Intervention, do you? Here’s the problem now. Betts has pissed off enough people now, that I think it has hurt the chances of Angela Bryant to get reelected to the House. Remember, Rocky Mount isn’t the only town that “thinks” they know how to play politics. Halifax thinks they know how to play too. But, let’s make one final point about Gene Arnold’s misleading letter to the Telegram. The N&O isn’t out to “get” either Moore or Purdue. They saw an email that didn’t ASK FOR HELP RAISING MONEY. They saw an email that pretty much said, “here’s where you can send the check!”. That’s totally different and that’s what sent up the red flag.
