North Edgecombe High School can say something that Enloe, East Chapel Hill and Jordan high schools can't -- it's ranked among the top high schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

North Edgecombe High among the nation’s best

C. Dancy II - TPA Opinion: When I met Derrick Jordan a couple of years ago, I knew he was a special person. He was a smart young man and he was a teacher at SouthWest High School in the southern part of the county and his alma mater. He moved on to become an Assistant Principal at SouthWest and then shortly thereafter he moved on to become Principal of North Edgecombe High School in the northern part of the county.

Principal Jordan and I served on the Edgecombe County Democratic Party County Executive Committee several years ago. I have always had much respect for him because if you ever met Jordan you would know his love for children. Jordan's father died when he was a little boy and he was raised in a single family home by his mother in the projects on Cokey Road in Rocky Mount NC. Despite all odds Jordan has not only showed Edgecombe County but the nation that if you love your job/profession and if you love the children during the school day and after the school day that everyone wins. I have seen Jordan's professionalism during and after the school day as he interact with the children and staff.

I want to personally congratulate Principal Derrick Jordan, staff and the children at North Edgecombe for their awesome accomplishment.
