Around the Community
Jun. 13, 2007

It is important to spend time in and out of my District. I want people to know more about District 1 and I want to learn what is happening so I can share that with the folks in District 1. There are many exciting and promising things going on in Greensboro that never get the attention of the regular media outlets. I will attempt to share what I have learned around the community. Just as I take my time during comments from Council to share what District 1 is about and recognize things I think are important to people who care enough to get involved in our communities.

Senior Resources of Guilford Celebrated 30 Years

On May 31, 2007, at Christ United Methodist Church, the Senior Resources of Guilford had a breakfast and lunch celebration for its 30th Birthday. For an agency that provides so many services for the seniors in our community, it is still in its youth. As the council liaison to the Senior Resources of Guilford I have a special sense of belonging since I worked for USOA - United Services for Older Adults in the 80's and helped to create the Newsletter the Senior Record. Some of the services they provide are: Senior Line, Mobile Meals, Community Nutrition, Greensboro Senior Center, Refugee Programs, Rural Outreach, Foster Grandparents, Senior Wheels and more. They birthday party thanked the many volunteers for their service and shared information about a new website for "baby boomers", www.guilfordboomers.org

There were 21 volunteers recognized for 25+ years of service to Senior Resources of Guilford and 7 recipients of the President's Life Time Achievement Award for 4000 or more hours fo service to SRG.

Senior Resources of Guilford is located at 301 E. Washington St. Greensboro, NC www.senior-resources-guilford.org 336/373-4816

Bicycling In Greensboro, Inc. (BIG) held their 11 mile bike ride on Florida Street, from Barber Park to Holden Road and back.  They had about 35 bikers of all ages who came out on Saturday, June 9th. The turn out of African American bikers was low. The group is planning another event in the fall. Mayor ProTem Sandra Anderson Groat gave words of support and I was there to lend moral support.

One Hundred Years Old - Happy Birthday Dr. George Harrison Evans

Still sharp of wit, Dr. Evans told a group at the 27th Anniversary of the St. James Presbyterian Church Men's Choir Concert that if he had know he was going to live this long he would have taken better care of himself. Dr. Evans was honored at this concert on Sunday, June 3rd, as one of the founding members and the first president. The choir was conducted by Sheryl McAdoo and guest Accompanist Jerrye Mooring. Special recognition was also given to Margaret Gill who was the first director of the choir. They called themselves, "Margaret's Boys". The choir sang Mozart, Handel, McIntyre, Burleigh and Crouch.

On Saturday, June 2nd, a special birthday party was held for Dr. Evans at St. James Presbyterian Church. He received recognition from the NC State Senate and House of Representatives, Greensboro City Council and District 1 and the church. Rev. Diane Givens Moffett is the pastor. Golf anyone?

The International Civil Rights Museum held their 4th Annual Golf Benefit Tournament on Monday, June 4th at Bryan Park Golf Course. It was an experience for me since I have never played 18 holes of golf before and I had not held a golf club in 35 years when I was in college. I was apart of the Coliseum Team head by Matt Brown. The winning teams were headed by Commissioner Skip Alston and Former Chief Justice Henry Frye.

Glenwood's on the Go!

The Greater Glenwood Neighborhood Association Meeting was held on Thursday, June 7th. The group saw a presentation about the Grove St. Revitalization project presented by Cheryl Small. She indicated that much of where Glenwood is now is due to the efforts of their City Council representative.  The presentation outlined the neighborhood's vision of what Grove St. could be one day. The presentation is very well done and the members are excited about the city coming in to help them with this project.

Jeff Sovich from HCD Neighborhood Planning made a presentation about a draft of short and long term goals for Glenwood.

GGNA has a community garden and is planning weekend festivals. The garden was begun in early March. Greensboro Parks and Recreation, Guilford County Health Dept. and NC Cooperative Extension Service are partners with GGNA in this effort.

The GGNA meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm at Glenwood Recreation Center on Coliseum Drive. Barry Scarbrough is the President.
