Changing Views on Immigrants Washington Post April 7, 2007  Looking the Other Way on Immigrants some Cities Buck Federal Policies

Hightstown, NJ. is the latest city  to welcome immigrants to their city with open arms. They have a don’t ask and don’t tell policy towards illegal aliens and have found the relationships are better for all. The federal government had launched a huge raid on a apartment building two years ago and that is when problems with wary immigrants began to emerge. City father to conteract the problems did a very wise thing: they  enacted a sort of immigrant bill of rights opening up many services to immigrants  and never asking their legal status. Recently they even had a bilingual computer class offered to help immigrants get better paying jobs. This is a trend taking place all across the United States; an acceptance that the immigrants are here to stay and are generally productive  members of the community who deserve to be recognized and helped to become assimilated into our culture and society.  So as some cities ban immigrants,  others are  opening their doors.

While Congress sputters and delays action over the so called immigrant problem, the mainstreets of America are taking action. A poll by the Washington Post and ABC News in December found 29 percent of respondents calling immigrants "good" for their communities and an equal number describing them as "bad." About 39 percent said they make no difference.  The "makes no difference " for all intents can be added to the good column.  So that makes American's  in general not concerned about the new people down the block.  We who have had dealings with Hispanics find them to be well mannered, hard warking people who just want to make a decent life for their families.  Yes,  there are criminals among them.  There are criminals everywhere of every class and race and sex.  The most however are just like you and me,  and we should do more to help them become Americans citizens starting with classes to help them learn English.
