A friend sent this too me because she knows how passionately I love my country. My grandparents came here from Russia in 1910 in steerage and made it their beloved land. The flag was always flown from my Grandpap's porch. My husband and I fly the flag on the embankment above the patio of our rental apartment and often see neighbors stopping to view the flag. God how I love this country, and am so damned proud to be an American. I hope you enjoy this tribute with Elvis sing America in the background. It is borrowed but I feel sure the author wouldn't mind my sharing. Brenda

Thank you Ms. Bowers for your comments. I feel as though we need to move on. I am far too personally invested in the subject of Skip Alston for the two of us to have a clear, non-bias dialogue. You obviously have strong feelings about this, as I do also. The News & Record will have their opinion, The Rhino Times, theirs, and you, yours. Again, thank you for expressing your opinion. On a another note.
I will be discussing Gang Violence in the Triad's community, an issue that is only recently coming to true light. On this week's radio address. Please give me more information on the local chapter of the NAACP you speak of that demanded an apology from the Mayor in Charlotte. Was this the NAACP Chapter in Charlotte?Greensboro?Raleigh? My understanding is that he was actually speaking out at the City Hall here, so when you said local, I needed to zero in on which local chapter. Thank you ma'am.

DeSean, You will find the article I reported on in my blog in the N&R Friday July 13. 2007. If you will google (Charlotte NC Observer NAACP McCrory) a whole slew of articles will pop up. If you read my post "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly News" you will see that I applaud Mayor McCrory for his remarks and feel that more people, Black people, should be trying to get Black youth back off of the downward spiral they have been on for several decades. Honey, it breaks my heart to see what has happened to the Black lower class in the ;last half century. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Honestly we thought all the social programs would help but instead they just contributed to the destruction of a race---your race. Something has to be done to pull Black youth back from the cliffs they are hurdling themselves over in record numbers. I blog a great deal about this if you may have noticed. I really do not want to place blame but who is responsible for Black teens having babies with no fathers in site? these children are doomed to grow up and either die on the streets or crowd the prisons. Since it seems our Black leaders and Black ministers who should be leading in the endeavor to help Black youth are too busy playing politics and chanting racism and victim hood it seems White men have to speak out. Nationally 73% of Black children are illegitimate and will grow up in a one parent home. I have it on good source that in Greensboro/Guilford the figure is closer to 80%. Dear Lord this destruction of lives has to stop! It wasn't supposed to be this way. When we got all the social programs started they were to help the poor but while the poor Whites spend an average of 14 months on Welfare, poor Blacks spend and average of 9 years on welfare. I read a great deal of what Shelby Steele writes as he seems to have a fair handle on the situation and being a Black man perhaps you can better relate to him. Look him up and get your hands on some of his books and essays: Shelby Steele is the Robert J. and Marion E. Oster Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He specializes in the study of race relations, multiculturalism, and affirmative action. He was appointed a Hoover fellow in 1994.Son, I am not a mean or bitter or nasty person. I am a very hurt and angry and frustrated person who can no longer do anything but beat out my blog. Come to me any time and I will give it to you straight as I see it. And I will also try to lead you to other sources. LOL LOL Just thought of something: I am sounding like the school teacher I have always been at heart! Brenda Bowers
