There is a Solution to the GPD Debacle

Frustration is building in Greensboro over the City Council monkey act; hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. You can see this in the letters to the Editor to the Rhino and to the N&R. But the City Council has apparently made a pact to simply ignore everything and anything they see or know is a criminal action by one of their own or any member of the city staff. This is with the exception of Sandy Carmany who is still defending Mitch Johnson on her blog. That pathetic little man is still working, but his reputation in Greensboro is beyond repair and he himself is seen as beyond redemption.
Ben Holder’s statement is typical of the public’s reaction and frustration: “Why is the legal department seen as credible? The most important thing that has been revealed is there is a monstrous double standard in the GSO gov. Miles absolutely lied about talking with David Lawrence. Did you think she only lied once? Mitch lied about Willow Oaks...Carmany defended that lie...That is what needs to be talked about and acted upon. However, most will continue to ignore this double standard in hopes of fulfilling a fantasy of helping catch a racist police squad to help them deal with their white guilt. Miles should be fired and according to Carmany, if Mitch lied he would be fired. He lied...and he is still working. The council is obviously full of bologna. Anything they put out should be questioned...but that wont happen…”
I asked on another blog just who is responsible for investigating possible criminal actions taken by the City Council, City Manager or any others in City Hall. No one answered me, but of course the only logical answer is the GPD under the leadership of the Chief of Police. Now how does one go about investigating one’s bosses? Or for that matter, investigating something your bosses don’t want you to investigate (Project Homestead investigated by Wray and Miles demanding Wray’s records on his investigation of Project Homestead as an example).
I propose then that the best thing that could happen in Greensboro to combat crime on ALL levels is for the people to put a referendum on the ballot to make the Chief of Greensboro’s Police Department an elective office. He will have to answer to the PEOPLE every four years and not to all of City Hall where so much that is shady is happening.
David H. told me my idea “sucks” and stated that all we had to do was elect honest people. Well from what I can see from my study of past news coverage (yes! The N&R) and past government reports, Greensboro has had a short supply of “honest officials” this past quarter century and this situation isn’t likely to change that down hill slide anytime soon.
Then from Fred Gregory, “Brenda at least you are thinking about solutions, however that is a wonderful idea but alas forlorn. The inmates are running City Hall and the GPD. Welcome to Greensboro, 2007. Abandon all hope ye who enter here. Would make a great serialized novel , say 32 chapters.”
There is hope however because it is not up to City Hall to put this referendum on the ballot as the people can force the issue by getting a certain percentage of the city's population on a petition demanding it be put to a city wide vote. I am not a lawyer so do not know the legalities involved, but I have been involved as a foot soldier sitting in malls getting signatures on a petition for a referendum. So I know it can be done by the people if they have the will to clean up their government. I think Greensboro residents are ready to do just this because there is so much disgust and anger out there that given an option that will work to curb the criminals the people will grab at it. Now with the system of districts and certain districts always electing those who abuse their office the system seems hopeless. This is why the low turn out at elections; the voters just feel it is a waste of time. The election of Chief of Police would not be a district vote, but city wide, and therefore will not be so easily controlled. We just need dedicated people to get the ball rolling. BB
